Industry and government officials managed to drive down costs in several other key UK maritime programmes in 2006-07, according to the NAO.rnA total of GBP58 million was lopped off the projected final bill for the Joint Combat Aircraft, the UK segment of the United States-led multinational Joint Strike Fighter (F-35 Lightning II) programme.rnThe current forecast cost of the supersonic, short take-off and landing aircraft required by the UK Royal Navy (for its two future aircraft carriers) and the Royal Air Force is GBP1.858 billion, significantly less than the GBP2.236 billion approved at Main Gate.rnProject managers shaved GBP16 million from the troubled Nimrod Mk 4 Maritime Reconnaissance and Attack aircraft programme, although it is still running almost six-and-a-half years behind schedule.
