Although recent years have seen the introduction of a new genre of high-performance multifunction radars, the medium-range, three-dimensional (3-D) volume search radar remains the prime sensor for area-wide picture compilation, situational awareness and weapon target indication for the majority of surface combatants.rnFurthermore, while fixed-face phased arrays are slowly encroaching on their territory, more 'conventional' radar types using mechanically rotating antennas have by no means reached the limit of their potential and remain the subject of continued development and performance enhancement.
