The growth of the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN/Daehanminguk Hae-gun) during the past decade has been nothing short of remarkable, as it has transitioned from a coastal defence force to one of five navies worldwide that fields surface combatants equipped with the Aegis combat system. The launch on 26 March of a third Aegis-equipped KDX 3 destroyer, RoKS Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong, is emblematic of the blue water aspirations that have accompanied the country's enhanced economic stature and desire to fulfil wider security responsibilities on the global stage.
