The nature of Australia's geography dictates that ships participating in regional exercises are generally obliged to transit significant distances. That goes for minor war vessels as much as for larger combatants, as evidenced by the participation of the Huon-class mine counter-measures vessels (MCMVs) HMAS Huon and HMAS Yarra in the fourth Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) mine countermeasures exercise (MCMEX) off the Indonesian island of Pulau Bintan from 25 March to 5 April 2011.
