US naval services refocus on western Pacific

The Asia-Pacific region is becoming the primary focus for the US Navy and US Marine Corps (USMC) as the two services adapt to the uncharted waters of fiscal austerity, their leaders told the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space conference on 16 April. With the navy starting to revise its overarching strategy, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert warned that the current operational tempo could not be maintained indefinitely. The navy is in the "very early stages" of "refreshing" its maritime strategy, Adm Greenert noted in his opening remarks to the conference at National Harbor, Maryland. The issue of anti-access/area denial is one area that could potentially be addressed in a classified addendum, he told the audience.
