New technology, new thinking to fight the internal battle

Headquartered in Plymouth, the RN's FOST organisation exists to train ships' companies to operate and fight their ship safely. FOST staff - or 'sea riders' - are embarked with two objectives in mind: first, to oversee, advise and evaluate the performance of personnel; second, to orchestrate a pre-planned sequence of events and enactments. As well as assessing how individual units fight the external battle against air, surface or submarine threats, FOST also addresses a fourth warfare environment fought within the ship: battle damage repair. "Lose the internal battle and you will lose the ship," is a FOST mantra. Therefore, a large part of what the organisation teaches is concerned with the ship's internal organisation, and how robust that organisation is in an action damage situation.
