Intruder alert: DDS systems stand watch

In July 2012 maritime systems specialist Atlas Elektronik announced that the German Navy's four new Baden-Wuerttem-berg-class (Type 125) frigates are to be equipped with Cerberus Mod 2 diver-detection sonar (DDS) systems. This will be the first installation of a DDS system on board a NATO vessel, the company said. The Type 125 frigates, which are expected to enter service from 2016, will be optimised for long-endurance conflict-prevention and crisis-management operations, deploying for up to two years far from the safe haven of their home base. It is the possibility of prolonged excursions to ports and harbours in some of the world's toughest trouble spots, where such ports and harbours may have limited or non-existent underwater security, which makes the Type 125 frigate an ideal platform to demonstrate the operational utility of shipboard DDS.
