In an extraordinary event in April 2011 during Operation 'Ocean Shield', two of NATO's smaller navies - the Royal Netherlands (RNLN) and the Royal Danish (RDN) - conducted an operation that effectively ended piracy in the Indian Ocean. Devised and led by multinational staff aboard the RNLN flagship HNLMS Tromp, this action involved the simultaneous disruption of two pirate motherships in the vicinity of their anchorage off the Somali coast. Coming at a time of international reluctance to do anything that might put the lives of captured seafarers at extra risk, its success galvanised nations to take similar proactive actions, thus ending the pirates' monopoly.
