摘要

It is somewhat fitting that one of the oldest bases of the Regia Marina (the navy of the Kingdom of Italy) evolved during the Cold War into one of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's (NATO's) first and most respected institutions. While the Italian Navy maintains a presence in La Spezia, northern Italy, the base now hosts the activities of the alliance's Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE). In its seventh decade of operation, the centre strives to maintain its position at the cutting edge of alliance underwater technology research and development.
