Procurement programmes deliver a broad range in capability

Vietnam's navy and coastguard procurement programmes cover a broad range of platforms, from the high-profile submarine project to patrol boats. The six Project 636 Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines were ordered in 2009 at an estimated cost of more than USD2 billion. Delivery of the boats commenced in November 2013, and the sixth and final unit is expected to arrive in 2016. The deal also included the establishment of support and training facilities at the PAVN Navy's Cam Ranh Bay base. The fleet should yield two boats for operations, with another pair available with some notice and the other two boats in overhaul and refit.
