Pacific power: Naval activity underpins Russia's growing Asia-Pacific focus

In May 2016, a flotilla of Russian Federation Navy ships, led by the Project 1155 (Fregat) Udaloy-class destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, deployed to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM)-Plus maritime security exercise in the South China Sea. The flotilla's presence at the exercise was one of a number of high-profile Russian naval deployments across the region in recent years. The potential impact of this increasing presence upon the region's wider strategic balance is being noted closely elsewhere.
