Before Singapore commissioned its first Challenger-class diesel-electric submarine (SSK) in July 2000, Indonesia was the sole post-Second World War submarine operator in Southeast Asia. Since 2000, the region has seen the delivery of at least 10 new submarines, with more boats in the pipeline. "The water [in the Southeast Asian region] is getting more congested, and submarine-related incidents, when they do happen, can be quite catastrophic," said Major Ng Kheng San, commanding officer of MV Swift Rescue, an 84 m submarine rescue ship in service with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).
