Littoral lightweight: Baltic ASW mission shapes Sweden's TS47 torpedo

Sweden claims an indigenous capacity in the design and manufacture of torpedoes going back more than a century. Since the early 1960s the national industrial enterprise, historically based around the town of Motala on the shores of Lake Vaettern, has developed four generations of electrically powered 400 mm lightweight weapons for deployment from submarines, surface ships, and helicopters. While most lightweight torpedoes developed worldwide in the post-war period are 324 mm in diameter, the shallow waters of the Baltic and the Swedish archipelago have dictated development of larger- diameter hulls with near-neutral buoyancy.
