As the polar ice mass above the Arctic Circle rapidly retracts due to global warming, the 'Arctic summer' - the melting season from June through September during which the Arctic experiences 24-hour sunlight and the warmest ocean water temperatures -has seen diminishing thickness and extent of sea ice over the past 30 years.
