Commander Claus Buur, a Royal Danish Navy (RDN) officer responsible for the MH-60R project within the Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO), told Jane's that the initial operating capability will be reached in mid-2017 when the first aircraft is ready to deploy to the North Atlantic Ocean region. The aircrew are scheduled to be certified to deploy in May, and should then set to sea aboard a Thetis-class frigate. Since 2014 the Thetis-class frigates, whose primary role is to ensure the sovereignty of territorial waters and to provide search-and-rescue (SAR) and law enforcement capacity in the North Atlantic, have been undergoing a modernisation programme - including the fitting of new hangar facilities - to enable them to embark the aircraft.
