Montrose docks for upgrade work

The UK Royal Navy (RN) Type 23 frigate HMS Montrose (F 235) has arrived at Babcock Defence Services' dockyard for a GBP15 million (USD20.8 million) upgrade, writes Doug Richardson.rnWork will include the Sea Wolf Mid Life Update (SWMLU) to maintain the effectiveness of the ship's surface-to-air missile system against future threats and the first installation of an Outfit DNA(2) command system, said the UK Ministry of Defence on 30 December 2008.rnAlso known as the Surface Ship Command System, DNA(2) is an upgraded version of the Outfit DNA(1) system initially installed on Type 23 frigates. It uses commercial off-the-shelf equipment and is based on the CMS-1 combat data system being fitted Type 45 air-defence destroyers.rn"This is a comprehensive upgrade to both Montrose's operational systems and her self-defence capability and represents a significant investment in the fleet," said Minister for Defence Equipment and Support Quentin Davies.
