US Navy conducts JSOW C-1 test against moving ship target

The US Navy has completed the first free-flight test of the Raytheon AGM-154C-1 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW C-1), it was announced on 29 July, writes Doug Richardson. Conducted at Point Mugu Sea Range, California, on 26 July, this was the first end-to-end functionality test of a JSOW C-1 from pre-flight to target impact. In its basic form, JSOW is a medium-range air-to-surface glide weapon that uses a GPS/ inertial navigation system for midcourse guidance and an infrared seeker for terminal homing. Designed for use against maritime targets, the new JSOW C-1 variant has a Link 16 weapon datalink for in-flight target updates and upgraded seeker software able to autonomously target a moving ship and guide the weapon to a specific aim point. It will be the first network-enabled weapon in US service.
