Russia to upgrade its missile warninq radar network

Russia's well-publicised efforts to rebuild its missile and aircraft warning radar network will include the delivery of about 20 new radars in 2012, Colonel Vladimir Drik, the Russian Air Force spokesman, told the Russian Interfax news agency on 19 January. The current planning objective is for 70 per cent of the Russian Air Force's radars to be 'modern' designs by 2020. Col Drik identified these as including "updated Gamma-SiM, Sopka, and Volga stations and various versions of Nebo". He said that the Volga radar system is entering service to replace the 59N6E Protivnik L-band three-dimensional air-defence radar, with training on the system due to begin at the Vladimir training facility before the end of 2012. The only 70M6 Volga UHF radar currently operational is deployed at Baranovich in Belarus. Construction of this radar started in 1982 and it became operational in 2003. According to Col Drik, 100 Nebo-M radars are scheduled to be delivered by 2020.
