When Russian forces annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014, Ukrainian artillery was best placed of all forces to influence the conflict that followed. Nonetheless, Ukrainian artillery units had to make significant adjustments in tactics and equipment. Mykola Bielieskov, an analyst at the Kiev-based Institute of World Policy, has estimated the readiness of Ukraine's armed forces was as low as 40% when the war started - it is thought that the readiness among artillery units was slightly higher.
