The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is planning to compete the design, development and implementation of a substantial inboard update to the Royal Navy's (RN's) Sonar 2087 low-frequency active/passive sonar in a move that could challenge the incumbency of current prime contractor Thales UK. Sonar 2087 full operational capability (FOC), to meet the requirements laid down in SRD 7590, is intended to replace the current inboard processing equipment with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware on open-systems architecture. It will also address re-hosting existing software or developing new open modular software and the partial or full integration of the Sonar 2050 medium-frequency hull-mounted sonar inboard equipment with Sonar 2087 to improve underwater picture quality. Currently fitted to four RN Type 23 frigates, with retrofits under way or planned for four more, Sonar 2087 is a wide-area sonar system that combines a low-frequency active towed body (transmitting at frequencies of less than 2 kHz) and a very-low-frequency (less than 0.1-1 kHz) passive towed array. It achieved its in-service date during 2005 and initial operating capability (IOC) was declared on 1 November 2007.
