General Electric (GE) and Rolls-Royce have both been awarded development contracts for the Versatile Affordable Advanced Turbine Engine (VAATE), to offer revolutionary gains in efficiency by 2017, writes Mark Daly. VAATE is sponsored by the US Air Force Research Laboratory, which plans a new demonstrator engine combining technology from the Adaptive Versatile Engine Technology (ADVENT) and Highly Efficient Embedded Turbine Engine (HEETE) programmes, for which GE and Rolls-Royce both received contracts in 2007.
