Enhanced electronic sentinels bring improved precision to the battlefield

Portable pulse Doppler battlefield radars were first fielded in the late 1950s by the French Army during the Algerian war. Using centimetric wavelengths, these radars were small enough to be conveyed by dismounted troops and Jeep-type vehicles, providing a means of remotely sensing the movement of personnel and vehicles in all weather conditions, in some cases out to distances as great as 20 km.
