Until recently, combat engineer vehicles (CEVs) - or armoured engineer vehicles (AEVs) as they are also referred to - were mostly based on obsolete main battle tank (MBT) chassis. It makes obvious financial sense to take advantage of ageing platforms by re-roling them for marginally less vulnerable engineering roles, capitalising on their bulk, power and traction. However, those aging base vehicles often lacked the mobility to operate with more modern manoeuvre elements and the trend today is to develop CEVs with the same level of mobility and protection as modern MBTs to ensure that they can operate alongside them in the forward area.
