Russian and NATO officials have agreed to bolster their support to the nascent Afghan Air Force (AAF), which flies several aircraft of Russian origin. Sergey Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, and his NATO counterparts agreed during a NATO-Russia Council (NRC) meeting in late April to increase their efforts to help maintain the AAF's growing helicopter fleet. "The decision expands the NRC's support of the Afghan Air Force by providing training to technicians on more types of helicopter and in new areas such as developing the Afghan Air Force's medical evacuation capability," according to a NATO statement.
