Iranian parliament approves cabinet and national security appointments

On 25 August, Iran's parliament approved 18 of President Ebrahim Raisi's 19 proposed ministerial appointments, establishing a hard-line cabinet. Ten of the ministers, who did not include any women or Sunnis, had served in the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (2005-13), with several previously being members of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC). The only proposed appointment that was rejected was Hossein Baghholi, who was viewed as too inexperienced. Given Raisi's extended background in the judiciary, and consequent lack of exposure to diplomatic and economic management, appointees in these areas are likely to play a prominent role in policymaking.
