PA halts security co-operation with US and Israel over West Bank annexation

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas declared on 19 May that the PA would immediately absolve itself "of all agreements and understandings with the American and Israeli governments, and all of the obligations based on these understandings and agreements, including the security ones". Abbas further called on Israel to assume its obligations "as an occupying power... with all its consequences and repercussions". The decision came in response to Israel's plan to annex parts of the West Bank in July 2020 following US President Donald Trump's 'Deal of the Century' peace plan announced on 28 January.Abbas's decision was followed by meetings between PA security services chiefs and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh on 21 May. Major General Adnan Damiri, the spokesperson of the PA security forces, who attended the meeting, told ]anes on 21 May that Abbas had spoken to the officials and prime minister via telephone and re-affirmed his order.
