Series of cases indicates expansion of Chinese HUMINT operations abroad

Several developments in May and June attested to the apparently growing scope of Chinese overseas espionage operations. On 24 May, the French Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed earlier reports in Le Quoti-dien that two retired officers from its Directorate General of External Security (Direction Generate de la Securite Exterieure: DGSE) had been detained in December 2017 on espionage charges. The delayed news release may have been an attempt to avoid alerting other members of a possible espionage ring.
