China's State Council - effectively the country's cabinet - announced on 17 September that Jiang Jiemin, director of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) that manages state-owned enterprises (SOEs), had been removed from his post for alleged "serious disciplinary violations". The removal of such a high-profile government official followed reports on 30 August in the South China Morning Post newspaper that retired Chinese Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) member Zhou Yongkang was under investigation for alleged corruption. The report has not been confirmed; if true, an official announcement could be months away.
