UN approves plan for offensive peacekeeping force in DRC

The united nations Security Council on 28 March unanimously voted to adopt a resolution on the creation of a new peacekeeping brigade in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for an initial period of one year. The force, known as the "intervention brigade", will be the first UN peacekeeping operation acting under a Chapter VII mandate to carry out targeted offensive operations. The brigade, a force of around 3,600 soldiers, potentially coming mostly from South Africa, Tanzania, and Mozambique, will operate under the command of the current UN peacekeeping operation in DRC, the United Nations' Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Mission de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour la Stabilisation en Republique Democra-tique du Congo: MONUSCO).
