The Direction Generale de l'Armement (DGA), the French defence procurement agency, announced on its website on 23 July that it would order an additional 12,000 HK416 5.56 mm assault rifles this year. This follows the receipt of 2,000 of the rifles in June. More than 53,000 HK416s have been delivered since 2017 after the rifle was selected the previous year to replace the French Armed Forces' FAMAS rifles, the DGA added. The agency said 8,000 of the 12,000 HK416s scheduled to be delivered in 2021 have now been received. The rifle is compatible with the Fantassin a Equipement et Liaisons Integres (FELIN) soldier system, with the possibility of integrating new technologies in the future, especially day/night optics and aiming systems, according to the DGA.
