The Polish Ministry of National Defence (MND) has launched the procurement procedure forthree coastal defence vessels forthe navy underthe Miecznik programme, Defence Minister Mariusz Btaszczak tweeted on 15 March, adding that the contract signing was planned by the middle of the year. The new ships are to be equipped with an air-defence system capable of engaging both aircraft and missiles, as well as a large number of naval surface-to-surface missiles. The MND told Janes on 15 March that the vessels would have a firepower equivalent to a Polish coastal defence missile battalion, which is armed with 48 Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile (NSM) all-weather surface-to-surface missiles with a range of up to 200 km.
