The anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) that were fired from the Chinese mainland to an area in the South China Sea on 26 August successfully engaged a moving ship target, according to a speech given at an event organised by a Chinese think tank, the Moganshan Forum, in October. Although the missile firings were widely reported at the time, no information had been released about their intended target. The assertion that the missiles hit a moving ship was made by Wang Xiangsui: a former senior colonel in the People's Liberation Army Air Force. Wang is now a professor at Beihang University, which has close relationships with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC): the design authority for the DF-26ASBM.
