Australian defence spending to reach 2.19% of GDP despite record budget deficit

Australia's defence funding for the 2020-21 financial year will rise by AUD3.3 billion (USD2.35 billion) to AUD42.7 billion, the government in Canberra announced in its annual budget statement on 6 October. Expenditure as a share of GDP will reach 2.19%, comfortably meeting the government's commitment to grow the defence budget to 2% of GDP by 2020-21, despite facing a budgetary deficit due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
