JASDF sees rise in frequency of Chinese military aircraft approaching local airspace

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) scrambled its fighter aircraft a total of 523 times between 1 April and 31 December 2019 in response to Chinese military aircraft approaching the country's airspace: a 9% increase compared with the same period in 2018. The figure, which is the second-highest registered during this nine-month period since 2016, represents 70% of the total number of JASDF scrambles during those three quarters, according to data published by the Ministry of Defense (MoD) in Tokyo on 29 January.
