US lagging behind China in key dual-use technologies, warns US DoD official

The United States is lagging behind China in a number of "game-changing" dual-use technologies, Michael Brown, the director of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) at the US Department of Defense (DoD), said on 29 October. Speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, Brown stated that China is either already competitive with or setting the pace in six technological areas, including hypersonics, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum sciences, 5G mobile network technology, genetic engineering, and space systems, all of which are dual-use areas - except for hypersonics - meaning that they are not only important for military overmatch but also for economic prosperity.
