US DoD looks to update MILSATCOM network

The US Department of Defense (DoD) wants to revamp its military satellite communications (MILSATCOM) network and put in place around the end of this decade a network-centric, wide-band communications architecture to provide reliable and timely information to US and coalition forces worldwide. DoD officials envision a network that can handle significantly greater amounts of data and can pass that information at greater speeds to support a mobile force structure that will rely increas-ingly on unmanned and autonomous systems, The DoD has depended a lot on commercial satellites during the continuing operations in Afghanistan to deliver much of its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) data.
