US sends Land Warrior ensemble to task force for tests

The US Army is sending the Land Warrior digital soldier ensemble to an experimental task force to test its compatibility with the Future Combat Systems (FCS) concept. Brigadier General James Terry, director of the Future Force Integration Directorate, Army Capabilities Integration Center, at Fort Bliss, Texas, said on 7 October that the service wanted to take Land Warrior through its paces to inform the design of the FCS Ground Soldier System. Land Warrior, made by General Dynamics, originally faced cancel- lation by the army, but interest was revived in the system after 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team tested it during combat in Iraq. The FCS modernisation programme was recently restructured to accelerate delivery of equipment to infantry brigades; the Army Evaluation Task Force (AETF) at Fort Bliss is currently testing some early FCS 'spin-out' equipment, including ground robots, unmanned aerial vehicles and unattended sensors.
