The UK must guard against allowing current counter-insurgency (COIN) operations in Afghanistan to dominate the future shape of its armed forces, the UK's chief of the air staff has argued.rnAddressing the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London on 15 February, and mindful of the approaching UK Strategic Defence Review, Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Sir Stephen Dalton recalled the observations of the UK Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, that Afghanistan "must serve as a prism to view the future, not as a prison for our thinking".
