Germany to sell sixth Dolphin to Israel

Germany has agreed terms for the sale of a sixth Type 800 Dolphin-class diesel-electric attack submarine - the third with air-independent propulsion (AIP) system-to Israel.An Israeli defence official told Jane's on 5 May that while the procurement terms had been finalised, a contract had not yet been signed. However, he would not comment on whether Germany had offered to discount the cost of the submarinelikely to be around USD700 million - as it has in previous sales to Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak pushed for the purchase of the sixth boat in recent talks with German officials in Berlin and Tel Aviv. The deal was approved in late April 2011 by the Israeli Security Cabinet.
