USN shipbuilding budget procures eight battleforce ships, supports Columbia class

The US Navy (USN) requested USD171.5 billion for fiscal year 2018 (FY 2018), including procurement of eight new construction battleforce ships, the service announced on 23 May. According to the USN, the eight new ships the budget would purchase include one nuclear-powered Ford-class aircraft carrier, two Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, two Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines, one Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), one T-AO 205 oiler, and one T-ATS towing, salvage, and rescue ship. However, the Trump administration reversed course that day, directing the USN to support two LCSs but did not provide budget details for the additional USD634 million ship.
