Russian airports are intensifying preparations for a spike in traffic surrounding the 2018 FIFA World Cup from 14 June to 15 July, having expanded capacity and modernised operations - but important new runways at two Moscow airports will not open in time. The following airports serve the 11 host cities for the tournament: Sheremetyevo and fellow Moscow airport Domodedovo; Pulkovo (St Petersburg); Khrabrovo (the airport for the western Russian exclave of Kaliningrad); Saransk (southeast of Moscow); Gumrak (Volgograd); Platov (Rostov on Don); Sochi (on the Black Sea coast); Strigino (Nizhny Novgorod); Koltsovo (Ekaterinburg, south of the Urals); Kazan (Tatarstan); and Kurumoch (Samara). All 12 airports have received new navaids and radar systems, supplied by Almaz-Antey, and most of them have completed terminal and/or runway upgrades. For example, a second runway for Koltsovo was commissioned in December 2017 and Khrabrovo put its upgraded and extended runway into operation in January 2018, with a terminal refurbishment poised for completion by June.
