Active Living: Experts Identify Challenges and Expectations for Transportation's Role in Successful Communities

The ITE 2003 Technical Conference and Exhibit, which took place March 23-26, 2003 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA, was supplemented by three special sessions focusing on active living. The sessions featured a partnership between the transportation and health care professions made possible by the financial assistance of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. A series of white papers was prepared by the primary speakers of these sessions and by the conference keynote speaker. The papers promote an exchange of ideas among professionals in the transportation, health care and policy arena who seek to influence the direction of a new national movement to design our communities, neighborhoods and buildings in ways that promote walking, bicycling and other forms of activity.
