Traffic Engineering Operations Certification

Certification of traffic engineers is an issue that has been discussed in the profession for many years. In 1988, James Pline brought the issue to the ITE International Board of Direction. In 1990, ITE members were surveyed to determine their interest in certification. A positive survey response resulted in the development of sequencing events to TEO (traffic engineering operations) Certification. This article presents the issues surrounding certification, the status of certification as of Fall 1996, and the remaining steps needed to make TEO Certification a reality.
