Latin America: Brazil completes its ambitious B-band auction programme

Brazil's telecommunications regulator, the Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes (ANATEL), has succeeded in selling off the country's final B-band cellular licence to a consortium comprised of local companies Splice and Inepar for USD 50.9 million. The fifteen-year licence for Region 8 (Amazonas, Amapa, Para, Maranhao and Roraima) had failed to attract bidders in two previous licensing attempts by the Ministry of Communications. The sale, which was completed in October 1998, follows the disqualification of an international consortium, leaving the Splice/Inepar team to emerge as the lone bidder for Region 8.
