On Monday, October 21, 2002, the Internet didn't stop. That evening, the Internet's 13 DNS root servers suffered a heavy Denial of Service (DOS) attack that failed to disrupt service. The attackers shifted their focus to another set of critical DNS servers before ending the attack. Although the attack failed, it did manage to attract lots of press attention, with the usual mentions of possible cyberter-rorism. But no individual or group stepped forward to claim responsibility for the attack, which neither caused any injuries or fatalities, nor disrupted Internet usage.
