Preface to the Second Edition

As the applications of digitisation and of electronic connectivity have proliferated, so has the consumer's appetite for electronic devices. In 2000, 12% of the global population owned a mobile phone. This is expected to rise to 67% by 2019, with the number of users exceeding 5 billion. Two-thirds of the global population are now connected by mobile devices. The number of connected devices worldwide is expected to grow from 23 billion in 2019 to 75 billion by 2025, with sales of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in developing countries growing by 10-25% per year. Business and industrial applications have also shown steep growth. As one commentator put it, this could aptly be described as a sector on steroids.
