Ftp, the tcp/ip file transfer proto-col, is one of the most widely deployed programs in computing history. It runs on mainframes, midrange systems, desktop computers, PDAs, and even cell phones. It's used to transfer files between wildly disparate hardware platforms and operating systems. And its extensive command set makes it a challenge to master. FTP is particularly challenging on the iSeries, owing to its architectural uniqueness. There are the character set differences - EBCDIC vs. ASCII; the file type differences - fixed format vs. streaming; and the data containment differences - encapsulated objects vs. simple binary files. Learning to work with these differences isn't easy, and many subtle traps await the inexperienced. For example, transferring i5/OS objects from one system to another isn't as simple as moving data files on other systems, because FTP can't directly access encapsulated i5/OS libraries, files, and programs.
