Checking efficiency guarantees for new turbines or after turbine rehabilitation is very important. The penalty on not meeting the guarantee (too low efficiency) may be as high as US$50,000 for every 0.1% too low efficiency but even penalties this high will never pay the owner back the loss in revenue over many years of operation. But there are also many other reasons for measuring the efficiency level of a turbine. Reliable efficiency curves are necessary to make sound decisions about plant operation, decisions about refurbishments or change of runner, and long-term rehabilitation strategies, i.e. future optimum rehabilitations interval. Sometimes observed abnormalities in the operation, such as sudden sand erosion, increase of seal leakage water etc also mean it is necessary to perform a check.
