Multipurpose projects for water resources - pathways to adaptation in Peru

IN PERU, GLACIERS are important water reservoirs and essential to sustain human livelihoods. They provide water for people living in remote high-mountain areas, and for urban centres further downstream at the dry Pacific coast. The Peruvian Andes have the largest tropical glacier coverage worldwide (>70%) (Kaser & Osmaston, 2002; Casassa et al., 2007) providing key ecosystem services and being important for economy, societies and their cultural values (Figure 1).
