As we know, records are made to be broken, and now a nigh-on ten-year-old record is set to tumble. In November 2012 Paul Larsen's specially-manufactured Vestas Sailrocket 2 whipped across Walvis Bay (Namibia) at 121 km/h (65.45 knots). Now three wind and water-crazy students from the EPFL university in Lausanne - they were already involved in designing the Alinghi- are planning to harness the power of wind in an expedition to the South of France towards the end of next year, and sail at a speed of 80 knots (148.2 km/h).
